In short
A high street kitchen is usually chosen from standard unit sizes and priced early. A bespoke kitchen is designed around your room and how you live, made to order, and priced once the design is right. Here's what that changes in practice.
Designed around you, not a catalogue
Most people hear bespoke and assume it will cost more. It often doesn't. What it really means is a kitchen tailored to how you live, and that's what you'd want from any kitchen.
You bring your ideas, and we build on them with the things you might not have thought of. Something as simple as where the bin goes has a best answer, and it's different in every kitchen.
No quote on day one
Lots of people come to us after being rushed somewhere else: a layout priced up before it was right, and a feeling of being committed to something they weren't sure about.
We do it the other way round. We design it, refine it and change it as many times as you need, and only put a number on it when you look at it and say: yes, that's exactly what I want.
One team, from first visit to fitting
If you've walked out of a big kitchen chain feeling they didn't really listen, you're not imagining it.
With us you deal with the same person from your first visit to the finished kitchen, and the kitchen is fitted by the same installation team we've worked with for 17 years. No handoffs, and no strangers turning up at your door.
5 questions to ask any kitchen company
Whoever you get quotes from, us included, ask the same 5 things. Is the price based on the finished design, or is it a guess? Who actually fits it? Are the units rigid or flat pack? Where can you see and touch the quality? And what happens if you change your mind about the layout?
A good company will answer all 5 without blinking. If they get a bit cagey, that tells you something.
Side by side
| A typical high street kitchen | A CEK kitchen | |
|---|---|---|
| Sizes | Chosen from standard unit widths, with fillers to close the gaps | Made to order to fit your room |
| Design | Often a layout from a template | A full 3D design of your room in SketchUp, changed as often as you need |
| Price | Often quoted at the first appointment | Given once the design is right |
| Who you deal with | Different people at each stage | The same person throughout, and installers we've worked with for 17 years |
| Inside the cabinets | Usually plain white | Timber effect inside, edges matched to the doors |
| Where it's made | Usually a large factory | Our own workshop in Layer Marney, Essex |
High street kitchens suit plenty of people, and they vary. This is the general picture, not a description of any one retailer.
Why searching "kitchens near me" gives you the same answers
That search tends to bring up the same handful of showrooms and the same pitch, often with a quote before anyone has asked you a single useful question.
There's a showroom in Layer Marney most people don't know about. Free design consultation, no pressure, no price until the design is right, and one team from start to finish. If you want your kitchen done properly, come in for a conversation.
FAQs
Is a bespoke kitchen worth it?
If your room has awkward corners, sloping ceilings or you want every inch used well, usually yes. You also get a design made around how you live, rather than adapted from a template.
Is a bespoke kitchen always more expensive?
Not always. You can mix made-to-order pieces with a range, which keeps the bespoke look without the big price tag. See our cost guide.
Can I see a bespoke kitchen before I commit?
Yes. Our showroom has three full kitchens to open and try, and you see your own design in 3D on the big screen before anything is made.
